Australia to promote green buildings in India

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Australia will collaborate with India in technology transfer to promote green buildings that can involve projects ranging from multiplexes to airports here.

The Australian Trade Commission, the key trade and investment facilitator, will draw stakeholders from both sides into a partnership that will promote joint ventures and address the critical expertise gap in India. Though the framework of the collaboration is broad-ranging, more focussed partnerships in environment-friendly construction projects will emerge from the report of the ongoing study involving the Victoria Government and the Indian Green Buildings Congress, said Aminur Rahman, Consul General for South India, and Trade Commissioner, Australian Trade Commission. The Commission brought six companies to showcase expertise in Green Building Congress 2007.

Good choice

“India is a good place to have a technology transfer project and also to use the expertise of its engineers, especially the superior software skills,” said Ashak Nathwani, of Norman Disney and Young, New South Wales.

Green buildings might be around 30 per cent costlier to set up but things turned around in the long term through a drastic reduction in energy consumption, said Mohamed Adil, business development manager of the Commission.
