Seven injured in Delhi violence

New Delhi: Seven persons were injured in violence in south Delhi on Saturday.

Agitated people clashed with police and set a police post on fire after the men in uniform allegedly misbehaved with hawkers selling a holy book.

Trouble began in the evening at Jamia Nagar area as policemen tried to remove a stall set up by hawkers and some copies of the holy book fell on the ground.

Police said some agitated people attacked the policemen and went on the rampage, set a nearby police post on fire and damaged a number of vehicles.

Police resorted to lathi-charge and fired teargas shells to disperse the crowd.

Four policemen and three persons, who were injured in the violence, were taken to a hospital.

A senior police officer said the situation was brought under control and a large number of policemen were sent to the area.

Barricades were put on roads to regulate traffic and movement of people. — PTI
