A brush with wall texturing

Talk to your architect or interior designer about the variety of finishes that can adorn your wall. The choices won’t just bewilder you, but overwhelm you with an array of designery that could push you to the wall!

Such is the kind of wall-temperament prevalent in homes today, they can give a new lease of life to your plain-Jane dividers.

A multiplicity of hues for wall paints is passé…it’s the variety of textures created by common home tools on paint that speak a colourful story.

But first let us take up the kinds of architectural finishes that can be given to a wall.

This emerges from the overall concept of the building, i.e., materials mainly used to give a signature to a building.

Architectural materials help create spaces like concrete & brick walls, hollow blocks, stone walls etc., for cladding materials to sit on them, or textures to take shape.

Walls could have finishes with exposed concrete, natural stone, natural brick, plaster/paint and glass play.

All these are suitable for internal surface wall play that enliven a given space or for niche areas where they become a point of focus.

Other materials that have come in for creating textures and cladding on wall surface are wood, veneer, laminate, polished granite stones, marbles, ceramic tiles, paints, fabrics, jute and bamboo, metals, PVC and plastics!

Creative play in using them in novel patterns is what determines the art.

Textures with tools

After the mera wala creams and pinks, the paint industry with superior colour tint technologies offers eye-teasing tones to match exacting demands.

Some uncanny imagination has helped the paint take in textures created by blade, brush, stick, sponge and comb!

Berger Paints’ choices range from cement, paint and distemper to plastic emulsion and luxury emulsion.

Its ‘Kaleidoscope theme collection’ includes fun shades for kids’ rooms; ‘Cosmic Feng Shui’ follows the Pa Kua Formula, charting the directions of life-energy flows; and classic and designer graphic expressions are for interior spaces in their ‘Illusions’ segment.

Some of their exterior wall finishes are fungus proof and water resistant and suitable for varying ambient temperatures, with plasticisers to cover up small cracks too.

Brushing effects create a world of special finishes at Asian Paints.

Emulsion paints in their Royale Play are used to highlight certain portions.

The 60-odd combinations are dealt with six effects (ragging, brushing, sponging, combing, spatula and colour wash) for novelty, fancy, aesthetics and glamour!

With the housing sector growing rapidly with about Rs. 20, 000 crore business, the writing on the wall is indeed colourful for the paint industry.
