Revamped scheme to help job seekers

Staff Correspondent

It will ensure that people get work in genuine companies

Data regarding job seekers will be put on Internet

This will let companies contact them directly

Chitradurga: To give better job opportunities for people in Karnataka, the Dharam Singh government had proposed a plan of constituting an Overseas Employment Corporation. The Government had observed that several people had been hoodwinked under the pretext of giving rewarding jobs in foreign countries. To ensure that the job seekers got work with genuine companies abroad, the Government had planned to set up such a corporation with the help of the Ministry of External Affairs.

According to the sources at the Department of Employment and Training, the plan could not take off as adequate funds were not allocated. “The project never came out of the corridors of the Vidhana Soudha,” said an official of the department.

The official told The Hindu over the phone that the project was required to be set up under the Companies Act for which a minimum of Rs. 50 lakh had to be released.

The officials said that such projects had been drawn up in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra, and did fairly well there for a few years, but declined sharply soon after.

Now, after over three years, the department has planned to revamp the same scheme. The department is now computerising the data regarding job seekers in the State. The computers have been provided in 18 districts. Other districts will also be provided with computers soon. “The department has invited tenders for data entry. Soon all the districts will be linked through Internet,” the official said.

National Informatics Centre (NIC), Bangalore, will develop the software for this.

The official said that after posting the data on the Internet, the information about prospective employees could be obtained from anywhere in the world. Any company could directly contact the job seekers. A similar web portal had already been launched in Gujarat, he said. Job seekers could also post their resumes through Internet, he added. He said that he hoped that over 11 lakh job seekers who had registered their names in the department would benefit from the new scheme.
