NAMAKKAL: Food cell personnel and district supply officials seized 260 bags of rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System and arrested three persons on charges of smuggling the rice in Kumarapalayam on Friday night.
A press release said that on instructions from Collector G. Sundaramurthi, a team of officials conducted vehicle check up and intercepted a lorry.
The team found 260 bags of PDS rice in it and arrested lorry driver Thomas (32), Jegan (30) and Selvakumar(40).
In the preliminary enquiry, it was revealed that the rice was being smuggled to Karnataka.
The value of the rice was estimated to be around Rs. 2 lakh. A case was registered.
