Five VCK activists held for burning effigy

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: Five activists of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi were arrested on Sunday for burning the effigy of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Ram Vilas Vedanti for his reported fatwa against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi.

According to police, the VCK activists were arrested under Sections 143 , 149 and 341 of the Indian Penal Code.

Later, they were released on bail, the police said.

At around noon, a group of activists gathered near the Periyar Statue on Kamaraj Salai and shouted slogans against the VHP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for “raising religious issues to stall the Sethusamudram Project.”

Then they set fire to the effigy of the VHP leader.

DMK protest

Condemning Vedanti’s remark against Mr. Karunanidhi, Puducherry convener of the DMK R. V Janakiraman asked the party activists to stage a demonstration before the BJP office on Monday.
