VANIYAMBADI: Two persons were arrested on Saturday in connection with a group clash following Puthu Mariamman Temple trustee elections at Puthu Koil near here.
According to police, the elections were held on Friday. Mohan Raj, president, Bedhakalupalli panchayat, and Murugan, belonging to Puthu Koil, contested for the post of president and the latter won.
According to sources, as many as six supporters of Mr. Mohan Raj attacked Mr. Murugan’s son Rathna Kumar and his friend Premnath at Puthu Koil Junction on Saturday.
Mr. Kumar’s supporters retaliated and it resulted in a clash. Mr. Kumar and Mr. Premnath sustained injuries and were admitted to the Vaniyambadi Government Hospital. Two supporters of Mr. Mohan Raj - Sampath and Murugan - were also admitted to the hospital. Both the groups lodged complaints at the Ambalur Police Station.
Based on a complaint lodged by Mr. Kumar, the police arrested Mr. Sampath and Mr. Murugan for “instigating violence.”
