The strike by the Panchayat Raj Department engineers seeking cancellation of GO 508, which envisages splitting of the rural water supply wing from the Panchayat Raj Department, is unfair and uncalled for. The striking employees should remember that the Government did not seek their formal nod at the time of merging the two departments and so, the question of their approval for its bifurcation does not arise. Employees of Government departments should always be ready to serve the public regardless of their department, as they are paid for their services. With the talk of mid-term elections looming large over the State and the Centre and water likely to be one of the main election issues, it is obvious on the part of the Government to shift focus to overhaul of the system. To teach a lesson to the employees, the Government should stop payment of their salaries to bring them back to work. B.V. Subramanya Sastry Bapatla Welcome stepThe decision to ban smoking in educational institutions is a welcome step that will bring in discipline among student community. Since smoking is a vice, which is picked up by boys of high school without provocation, the authorities concerned should extend the ban to sale of cigarettes and other tobacco allied products on the premises of an educational institution. I also request the authorities concerned to set up more de-addiction centres across the State to cater to the needs of the increasing number of teetotallers. I. Subash Samuel Ulavapadu Ensure justiceThe barbaric incident at Nathnagar in Bhagalpur district of Bihar State indicates a backward march of human civilisation. If the locals could be found fault with for tying, kicking, thrashing and whipping with batons a thief, Md. Aurangzeb, who was caught snatching a gold chain from a woman, the police proved to be worse. The police personnel tied Aurangzeb to their motorcycles and dragged him until he was gasping for breath. Such heinous incidents make us wonder where are we heading. Members of the human rights commission would do well to ensure that justice prevails in the case. M. Blessing Moses Penumantra Unholy nexusWhenever an act of terrorism is carried out anywhere in the country, the Government is quick to remark that it is the handiwork of ‘certain external elements’. However, there is no possibility of external elements succeeding in implementing their evil designs without active support from the inside forces. The Intelligence agencies should zero in on this unholy nexus between the ‘inside forces’ and the ‘external elements’ to erode their support base effectively. K. Kameswara Rao Mortha
