Opposition will fight goonda politics, says Karthikeyan

‘Genuine voters could not vote in Pariyaram college’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress leader G. Karthikeyan said here on Sunday that the Opposition would fight the “goonda politics” of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Referring to the incidents in connection with the election to the governing body of the Pariyaram Medical College, he told the media that genuine voters were not allowed to vote in the election. The United Democratic Front (UDF) would mobilise the people to protest against that.

Mr. Karthikeyan demanded that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan should clarify what was stopping him from ordering an enquiry into the Merchiston estate deal. Referring to the Chief Minister’s statement in the Assembly about difficulties in ordering an enquiry, the Congress leader said that CPI was blackmailing the Chief Minister and was making haughty statements against an enquiry into the deal. Mr. Karthikeyan noted that the majority in the LDF, including the CPI (M) State Secretariat, had called for an enquiry. “So, who is afraid of an enquiry?” he asked.

He said that the UDF would continue agitations until its demand for an enquiry, keeping Forest Minister Benoy Viswom out of office, was met. If the LDF argument is that corruption had taken place during the UDF rule also, the enquiry could cover that too.

Consensus in House

On Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijaykumar’s statement that the Opposition was disrupting Assembly proceedings, Mr. Karthikeyan said that as he was the Minister concerned, Mr. Vijayakumar should try for a consensus between the ruling and Opposition fronts in the House.

Mr. Karthikeyan added that the Opposition had kept off the debate on only four the 15 bills discussed in the House.

Referring to the criticism about KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala speaking in the Assembly compound, Mr. Karthikeyan said that the CPI (M) leader Pinarai Vijayan, who was not a member of the Assembly, had offered lime juice marking the end of a satyagraha by the LDF in the Assembly building when the LDF was in the Opposition.
