‘IT sector must employ more Kannadigas’

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Jobs in the IT industry appear to be dwindling for Kannadigas despite Bangalore being the IT capital of India, according to a group of concerned IT professionals and Kannadigas.

At a brainstorming session, organised by the jobsite ‘IT Udyoga.com’ here on Sunday, the group wanted the corporate world that generates IT and ITES-related jobs to keep Kannadigas in mind during the recruitment drive.

Promoter of the jobsite, A.R. Venugopal, said that despite their talent Kannadigas were not being employed in the IT and ITES sector.

He said the Government should make it condition for firms, planning to set up businesses here, to employ Kannadigas.

Manish Harapanahally said most of the recruitment took place through campus interviews.

College authorities should also make efforts to ensure that companies recruited Kannadiga students.

He lamented that presently even unskilled jobs were also being given to non-Kannadigas. Vishwabandhu Nagesh, a yoga teacher, said that he had been teaching yoga and meditation to IT professionals in many companies he could see only a handful of Kannadigas there.

G.N. Narasimha Murthy, secretary of the Ganaka Parishat, said the Sarojini Mahishi report had already defined the term “Kannadiga.”

According to it, a person living in Karnataka for 10 years and knowing how to read, write and speak Kannada was a Kannadiga.
