N-deal will lead to energy crisis: MLC

Staff Reporter

‘India will become a puppet’

ADILABAD: K. Nageshwar, Member of Legislative Council, on Sunday said the controversial nuclear agreement between India and the United States would lead to energy crisis. He said the Union Government’s contention that nuclear agreement between the two countries would help the energy sector was incorrect.

At a seminar on ‘Nuclear agreement-implications’ organised by the Employees Voice magazine, the MLC wanted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to give Parliament a written assurance on its commitment with regard to laying of pipeline from Iran to India via Pakistan for supply of gas.

He said there was a fear that the United States would scuttle the project taking advantage of some of the provisions in the nuclear deal and allied Acts.

If the project gets suspended then the country would be denied of gas supply because of which major developments in the field of energy would be stopped. This would lead to energy crisis, he opined.

The various Acts relevant to the nuclear agreement actually render India a puppet in the hands of US, Mr. Nageshwar said.

In case the agreement was made the country would become a military ally of the US. In that event it would be forced to purchase that country’s weaponry irrespective of whether such weapons were needed or suited India’s purpose, he said.

Production costs

Talking about the cost of production of nuclear energy, the MLC said it not only was expensive but its cost would keep it out of bounds of common man. Telangana Non Gazetted Officers’ Union president M. Rajeshwar Reddy, secretary S. Ashok and general secretary of United Teachers Federation A. Venkat and others were present.
