BANGALORE: The State Police (Forest Cell) on Friday rescued an elephant held captive by two persons from Maharashtra and Patna. The elephant was being illegally used by them to perform antics in Hesarghatta. According to the police, the 42-year-old female elephant was in possession of Sudhamanath (40) of Nasik and Shamasunder Ram (42) of Maharajgunj in Patna. They had brought the elephant from an ashram in Nasik three months ago, to make money from it. The elephant was brought to the city, via Goa, two months ago. The elephant performed tricks at different pilgrim centres, including Dharmastala. The accused were also making money by selling the hair on the elephant’s tail for Rs. 250. On a tip off, the Forest Cell sleuths raided the place in Hesaraghatta and found that the two did not have relevant documents related to the elephant. They did not have the mandatory permission of Chief Wildlife Warden of Karnataka to brining the elephant into the State, which is included in the list of protected animals mentioned in Wildlife Protection Act.
