BJP silent on prime ministerial candidate

Neena Vyas

BHOPAL: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remains silent on who its prime ministerial candidate would be although it was clear, at the end of its three-day conclave here, that it is getting ready to wage the political and electoral battle.

As if to undo the damage done earlier by reports that the Advani camp is in a hurry for the party to declare the former Deputy Prime Minister its candidate for the top job, Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani himself, in his remarks to the executive, referred to the considerably improved health of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and hoped — as indicated by Mr. Vajpayee in his message to the conclave two days ago — that before long he would be in their midst.

Mr. Advani said that he hoped this happened soon and he would continue to “lead and guide us as in the past.”

Addressing a press conference here, party president Rajnath Singh deflected questions on the issue by reiterating that both Mr. Vajpayee and Mr. Advani were the party’s senior leaders.

“Recovering well”

He also added that he had met Mr. Vajpayee before coming to Bhopal and he was recovering well from his recent illness.
