Srinagar: A man was injured after being mauled by a black bear in a forested area in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. Sonaullah Chopan of Pahlipora village was attacked by the bear in Sargam forests when he was returning home from another village, a police spokesman said here. Chopan was rushed to a hospital where his condition was stated to be critical. Nearly 30 people have been killed and 150 others injured in the State in attacks by wild animals this year as compared to 12 deaths and 67 injuries in 2005-06. Wildlife experts say the decimation of forest cover, shrinkage of habitat and presence of security forces in the forest areas are the main reasons for behavioural changes in the animals.— PTI
