NEW DELHI: Against the backdrop of the Delhi High Court sentencing Mid-Day journalists on charges of contempt of court for running a series of reports about the former Chief Justice of India, Y. K. Sabharwal, eminent citizens and senior journalists came together at the Press Club of India here on Saturday to discuss its fallout and the future course of action.
They also discussed the one-month ban slapped by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on ‘Live India’ TV channel for airing a sting operation that turned out to be a fake.
On the issue of contempt of court, the participants, who included lawyer Prashant Bhushan and Magsaysay Award winner Arvind Kejriwal, felt that the media should come together and take up the fight on behalf of Mid-Day. A suggestion was put at the forum that all major newspapers publish the Mid-Day reports together to register their protest against the court order. Outlook magazine Editor-in-Chief Vinod Mehta assured the Mid-Day journalists that they were not alone in their fight.
