Three arrested for AMU student’s murder

ALIGARH: Three youths were on Sunday arrested in connection with the murder of an Aligarh Muslim University student last week, even as the varsity authorities said they were mulling a permanent security structure for maintaining vigil on the campus.

SSP Raghuvir Lal told reporters that the three youths — Ashraf, Sadiq and Tariq — confessed to having killed Mazhar Naeem on September 16. Naeem’s death led to widespread violence on the AMU campus with protesters ransacking several offices and setting afire the Vice-Chancellor’s residence. As a result of this, the institution was closed indefinitely.

Mr. Lal said the accused — all residents of Jeevan Garh locality adjoining the campus — attacked Naeem in an attempt to snatch his mobile phone. They told the police that they had no intention of killing Naeem.

AMU proctor A. Siddiqui said the university was now working out a permanent security structure for maintaining vigil at all entry and exit points on the campus. — PTI
