Staff Reporter

ATTAPPADY: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said that 10,000 houses will be constructed for the tribal people in the State. Giving away the keys of the houses constructed by the Attappady Hill Area Development Society under the Integrated Tribal Hamlet Development Scheme to 79 tribal people of Guddayur and Koothadichala tribal hamlets in Attappady on Sunday, the Chief Minister said that the Government would also launch schemes for tribal farmers.

Literacy campaign

A special literacy campaign would be launched for tribal people as 60 per cent of them were illiterate in the State. Mr. Achuthanandan added that the LDF government had provided 5,721 houses to tribals in the last 15 months. The Chief Minister said that 1,717 tribal families were given one-acre of land at Aralam in Kannur and also Rs.1 lakh for constructing houses. He said that the entire expenses for medical treatment of tribal people would be borne by the government.

He has urged the AHADS authorities for speedy implementation of the project in a more transparent way.
