COIMBATORE: A flock of painted stork descended on the city on Sunday. People passing by the Big Tank at Ukkadam were attracted by the birds that had yellow beaks and broad black stripes in the chest.
President of the Coimbatore District Forest Project and Environment Society N.I. Jalaluddin said that these birds normally arrived in large numbers here from November to March.
The fully grown stork had legs and neck that measured 93 cm, said Mr. Jalaluddin. Their number per flock was normally around 50 and the birds were found only in shallow waters. They ate fish and worms. The birds could be found in Ramanathapuram District in the State and at the Kokkare Bellur Bird Sanctuary in Mandya District in Karnataka.
Mr. Jalaluddin said he would appeal to the District Forest Officer to provide watchers at the spots the birds visited so that they were not hunted.
