Sad end: The seized cars at the Kochi City Traffic Police Station on Sunday. Kochi: The police arrested 30 drivers, including those of 19 cars, on the charge of drunk driving, at Valanjambalam on Saturday night. The police also seized some vehicles, most of which were sports utility vehicles and luxury cars. Assistant Commissioner of Police (City Traffic) K.B. Venugopal said the vehicles were seized in surprise checks conducted between 9.30 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. “It has been found that the drivers of 70 per cent of cars driven in the city during night are drunk. The 30 arrested persons were taken to undergo medical test. Most of them had consumed liquor from clubs and star hotels. We will write to the Motor Vehicles’ Department to suspend their driving licence.” The arrested persons included two doctors, a well-known chartered accountant, lawyers and businessmen. In many instances, women were found driving cars when their husbands were drunk. The police would undertake more such surprise checks, Mr. Venugopal said.
