Traffic rules

Sir, — Police toeing away the vehicles obstructing the movement of other vehicles and those parked in “no parking” zones is a common sight. After the introduction of this practice, the situation has become more complex with the police keeping such vehicles haphazardly in front of police stations which have no space to accommodate department vehicles. In front of police stations in Upparpet, Seshadripuram, and Malleswaram, old vehicles of the department are parked on private and public premises. They are parked even on footpaths. It is felt that the traffic police should first adhere to rules before pulling out private vehicles from “no parking” zones.

Widen BEL Road

Sir, — The New BEL Road, an important arterial road connecting the Ring Road with Sir C.V. Raman Road, is in terrible condition. The road could be widened, its pot-holed surface re-laid and street lighting improved. I hope this important stretch will be upgraded into a four lane road under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission’s special works programme.

‘Irresponsible’

Sir, — It is deplorable that eight elephants have died in Bandipur National Park under suspicious circumstances since June last year. The forest officials had left the carcasses of these elephants in the park without any concern about the diseases that they could cause to the wild life. The silence of the Forest Ministry shows that all is not well. Action in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines is needed in this matter, in the interest of conservation of wildlife.

Garbage disposal

Sir, — Door-to-door waste collection in the mornings is fine as long as it works, with the cooperation of the staff of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and householders. This routine often gets upset owing to staff absenteeism, with the householder not willing to waste time waiting for them. To complicate issues, domestic help who often handle garbage are not particular about using scientific methods of disposal. As a result, garbage is thrown on roads and pavements. It is time we placed garbage bins on pavements to avoid such situations. I hope the BBMP seriously considers this suggestion. However, the present system of

door-to-door collection of waste by the BBMP staff should go on.
