60 Tirukkural couplets presented in music form

G.K. Vasan hands over music cassette to D. Viswanathan

Tirukural did not belong to any religion or region

It has so far been taught as a subject in schools and colleges

CHENNAI: Sixty couplets of Tirukkural were presented both in music and dance forms by Tamil Maiyam.

At a function held here on Saturday, the music cassette, “Vazhum Valluvam,” was released by Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan. He handed it over to Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan.

Mr. Vasan said that though Tirukkural was more than 2,000 years old, it was relevant even today. It did not belong to any religion or region, and was common to people all over the world. He was happy to know that the Tamil Maiyam, to take the message of Tirukkural to common people, had brought it out music and dance forms.

Dr. Viswanathan felt that Tirukkural had so far been taught as a subject in schools and colleges, and it was not seen as a tool to bring about a social change. Now attempts were being made to tap the text for a social movement. At this juncture, Tamil Maiyam had brought out 60 couplets in music and dance forms. This would make Tirukkural more relevant to people.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University Avvai Natarajan and musicians Sudha Raghunathan and Aruna Jayaram lauded the effort of the Maiyam. Rev. Jegath Gaspar Raj appealed to educational institutions and cultural centres to support the Maiyam in making the music form of Tirukkural popular.

Another 60 couplets would be brought in music form in February. The Maiyam planned to make Tirukkural a movement throughout Tamil Nadu.
