KOLKATA: Six persons were killed following heavy overnight rain accompanied by occasional gales that continued to lash the city and adjoining districts in south Bengal on Sunday. The deaths were reported from South 24 Parganas district. Three persons were killed when their houses collapsed. The rains also caused flooding in large parts of the city raising afresh questions of the efficacy of the underground drainage network. There were reports of water gushing into houses in certain low-lying areas. A portion of a building collapsed in the central part of the city injuring one person. Trees were uprooted at some places. The local meteorological office attributed it to a depression in the Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast and forecast further heavy rains in the city and districts of south Bengal within the next 48 hours. An alert was sounded in the coastal areas of the State. Circular railway services were suspended and local suburban services were delayed because of certain stretches of railway tracks submerged under water.
