Ghei finishes 38th

Taipei: Defending champion Gaurav Ghei stuttered to a final round of five-over 77 to finish a lowly tied 38th, while local favourite Lu Wen-teh won the Mecuries Masters champion to record his second win on the Asian Tour this season.

Ghei shot a final round of five-over 77 to end with 14-over 302. S.S.P. Chowrasia (80) totalled 16-over 304 and Rahil Gangjee (76) ended with a total of 17-over 305 in tied 43rd place.

Ghei earned $3,475, Chowrasia took home $ 3,275 and Gangjee $3,125.

Lu, who has previously won the tournament back in 1994 and 1996, held his game for an even-par 72 in the final round on his home course at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club. He produced a four-under-par 284 winning total and walked away with the top prize of $100,000.

At Belfry (England), Jyoti Randhawa ran into a rough patch with three bogeys in his last five holes to slip to the tied 30th spot after the penultimate round of the Quinn Direct British Masters golf tournament here.

Randhawa shot a one-over 73 and is now one-under 215 for three days, seven shots behind leader and defending champion Martin Foster, who survived a double bogey finish to shoot 69 and retain a two-stroke advantage over six players lurking close to his 10-under 206 total.

Randhawa birdied the third and the ninth in his blemish free front nine and looked set to position himself well for the final round.

However, indifferent putting and bogeys on the 14th, 16th and 18th saw him end up with a 73 that pushed him down. — Agencies
