COLOURING NATURE: A scene from a painting competition for school and college students held in Malappuram on Sunday as part of a five-day awareness programme on tourism. Promoting tourism in a district such as Malappuram during the fasting month of Ramzan may not be easy. Knowing this, the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has embarked on a low-key tourism awareness campaign targeting students in particular. A painting competition held at DTPC Auditorium, with scenic Kottakunnu in the background, for school and college students on Sunday marked a quiet beginning to a five-day awareness programme on tourism. About three dozen students took part in the competition. Although the DTPC arranged competition for school and college students in two categories, the turnout of students from primary to higher secondary levels prompted the organisers to reorganise the categories. FocusStudents competed in primary, upper primary and secondary categories. Using various media of painting, they gave shape to idyllic scenes of the hilly Malappuram, all potential tourist pullers. The students, however, have to wait for a day or two for the results. K.V. Dayanandan, artist and caretaker of Lalithakala Akademi Kottakunnu Art Gallery, will announce the results after evaluating the paintings. The winners will be given prizes at a function to be held at MIC Higher Secondary School at Athanikkal near Pookkottur, when the DTPC celebrates the World Tourism Day on September 27. Photography contestThe DTPC is also organising a photography competition as part of promoting tourism. Anyone can submit entries on the ‘natural charm of Malappuram’ before September 27. A symposium to be held on September 27 will highlight various issues tourism. District officials said they were going on a low-key chiefly owing to Ramzan, the month during which Muslims fast throughout the day and shy themselves away from all worldly pleasures.
