A SURPRISE DISCOVERY: Remains of an ancient temple discovered by the people of Sauvvemala near H.D.Kote. MYSORE: An ancient temple site accidentally discovered by people of Sauvvemala near H.D. Kote has created ripples in the taluk. Reckoned to belong to the 8th century A.D., only the base and the foundation of the stone structure is now extant and the temple displays Hoysala style of architecture. Almost nothing survives of the main structure of the temple which was buried and was excavated by local people up to the foundation level. Incidentally, the “discovery” of the temple believed to be dedicated to Lord Shiva – as a Shiva linga was discovered from the site – is attributed to Marishetti who “dreamt” about the temple remains and confided with the local community. Initially, people of Sauvvemala were dismissive of Marishetti’s “dream” but on the latter’s insistence, they collectively decided to visit the site and take up excavation of soil and discovered the temple. So goes the story around which another myth is bound to be spun in due course. A few broken pots discovered from the site fuelled curiosity and the entire village descended at the spot to ascertain if there was anything precious inside. The local revenue officials found nothing but soil inside, putting an end to speculation about precious stones and jewellery. The Shiva Linga, which is about two-foot fall, has been shifted to the entrance of the temple remains and is now a new place of pilgrimage.
