New Rajasthan project for drinking water

Special Correspondent

MoU signed for implementing schemes in three districts of the State

JAIPUR: PHD Rural Development Foundation (PHDRDF) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rotary India Water Conservation Trust (RIWCT) for implementing water management projects in three districts of Rajasthan.

The MOU entails support to activities for recharge of ground water and for improving water levels in wells. The project aims at ensuring clean drinking water and reversal of rural migration. PHDRDF chairman S. L. Kapur and RIWCT president Sushil Gupta signed the MoU in the presence of Rotary International president-elect Dong-Kurn Lee and PHD Chamber president Sanjay Bhatia over the weekend.

“The project is being implemented as a part of the corporate social responsibility of the PHD Chamber. Initially it will be implemented in the water deficient villages in Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Alwar,” Mr. Bhatia said on the occasion. PHRDF has already implemented 53 water-harvesting projects in Rajasthan and Haryana to benefit an estimated eight-lakh population. Apart from identifying the locations, PHDRDF will provide 10 per cent of the funding requirements while Rotary would provide/arrange funds up to 65 per cent of the total cost. The local communities will have to contribute 25 per cent of the cost through shramdhan (contributory labour).

Mr. Lee said the experience gained from the project would be put to use by Rotary International in other countries, as drinking water has become a global concern.
