Irate women lock licensed liquor shop

Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: About 200 women from Jainad mandal head quarter on Monday forcibly locked the licensed liquor shop demanding its shifting to some other place.

Harassment

The women had earlier represented the matter to the district administration alleging harassment while coming and going to agriculture fields by people who drank at the shop.

When their efforts failed to get a positive response, the women resorted to this step.

TDP support

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) extended its support for the agitation by the women. Telugu Desam Mahila wing senior leader and former Adilabad Zilla Parishad chairperson Ch. Suhasini Reddy led the women in their protest against the closure of the liquor shop.

Norms flouted

The agitators quoted certain guidelines of the excise department that stipulated setting up of a liquor shop over a 100 metres from a school or temple.

The shop in question, the protestors alleged, was very much closer to the famous Laxminarayana temple at Jainad.

To top it there is a school also in the vicinity they alleged.

The women staged a dharna that will continue until the shop was relocated, Ms. Suhasini Reddy said.
