Pressure tactics: The rally taken out by DMK in Erode on Monday seeking speedy implementation of Sethusamudram project. — ERODE: Hundreds of men and women belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a demonstration before the Government Headquarters Hospital here on Monday urging the Centre to speed up the Sethusamudram project. Former Minister N.K.K. Periyasamy led the demonstration. Earlier, the Erode district DMK office-bearers had announced that a black flag demonstration would be conducted before the BJP office on Sathy Road, to register their protest against the ‘fatwa’ issued by the former MP, Ram Vilas Vedanti. Heavy police picket was posted near the BJP office. Partymen had assembled at VOC Park for the protest. It was also announced that Ministers N.K.K.P. Raja and M.P. Saminathan and Union Minister Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan would participate in the demonstration. Suddenly, the DMK leaders announced that they were organising a rally and demonstration pleading with the Union Government to implement the Sethusamudram project. A rally was taken out from VOC Park to the Government Headquarters Hospital, where the activists staged a demonstration. No Minister or MLA participated in the rally. Municipal Chairman K. Kumar Murugesh and DMK functionaries participated in the demonstration. Effigy burntEarlier some DMK workers of R.N. Pudur burnt the effigy of Vedanti in the Sathyamangalam-Mettur Road junction. On Sunday, the effigies of the former MP were burnt in two places in Erode.
