MYSORE: While elections to urban local bodies scheduled to be held on Friday have grabbed the attention of the people in Mysore district, the Mysore Zilla Panchayat (ZP) is preparing to elect its new president and vice-president on Wednesday. With the term of the incumbents, N. Rajamma and K. Mari Gowda, ending on Wednesday, Congress leaders are now busy finalising new candidates for the posts. While the strength of the zilla panchayat is 46, the Congress has a majority with 17 members, followed by 14 members of the All India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD), which later on merged with the Congress. The Janata Dal (Secular) has 11 members and the Bharatiya Janata two. The remaining two are independent candidates. MergerWith the AIPJD merging with the Congress, its strength has risen to 31. According to sources in the Congress, party leaders will be meeting on Tuesday to choose the new president and vice-president. While the post of president was reserved for Scheduled Tribe, general and Backward Class (A) candidates respectively in the three previous three terms, it has now reserved for a candidate from the Backward Class (A) category, while the post of vice-president has been reserved for a general category candidate. According to sources in the Congress, Mari Gowda of Beerihundi, Basavaraj of Tagadur, Somanna of Muguru, Rathnamma Gopalaraju of Gargeshwari, Ravishankar of Saligrama, Hemavathi Shivakumar of Ravandur and Lata Siddashetty of Doddakavalundi are in the race. However, they say the fight is between present vice-president K. Mari Gowda, who enjoys the patronage of party leader Siddaramaiah, and Latha Siddashetty, Ravishankar and Somanna. Sources told The Hindu that leaders, including Mr. Siddaramaiah, the former Union Minister V. Srinivas Prasad and the former Minister H. Vishwanath would meet at an undisclosed location and finalise candidates for the posts.
