Road blocked over clash

VILLUPURAM: The people of Periasevalai blocked traffic on the Thirukkoilur road by placing the bodies of two persons who died on successive days, on Sunday and Monday. The villagers held the police responsible for the deaths. But the police refuted the allegation.

The deceased are identified as V.Rani (60) and Velayutham (55). On intervention of officials, people let the bodies taken for post-mortem. Trouble erupted following the clash between the people of Saravanapakkam and Periasevalai over naming of the road junction. A large number of people from Periasevalai ransacked the houses at Saravanapakkam. The police went to Periasevalai and arrested 20 persons. They chased away trouble-mongers by using batons. Periasevalai people alleged that the two deaths occurred following lathicharge on them.
