Kalwakurthy project: TDP chief challenges Government

Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR: TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday challenged the Government to disprove his party’s charge that there were large-scale irregularities in the execution of Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS).

Launching his tour of the ongoing irrigation projects to highlight “substandard works”, Mr. Naidu alleged that over Rs.1,800 crore were misappropriated in construction of KLIS alone.

It was being constructed at a cost of over Rs. 3,000 crores. He charged that all the structures and works in the KLIS were being taken up by violating the contract agreement and project reports.

Tunnel size down

The bed width of the main canal had been reduced deviating from basic parameters, he said.

The tunnel size too was reduced to 6.5 metre diameter, against 9.8 metre diameter as originally proposed.

Speaking to mediapersons at Gudipallu Gattu reservoir forming part of KLIS after inspecting the surge pool pump house there, he said the poor quality of work was there for everybody to see.

After inspecting Yellor reservoir, he said that rivetment of the reservoir bund was very substandard and he never saw such low quality work.

The TDP chief went on to allege that most of the works in the ongoing irrigation projects lacked quality and the Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy was solely responsible for the state of affairs. He also visited Achampet branch canal at Sanduobatla village to highlight the irregularities.

Starting his tour from Kothur he participated in several road shows up to Yellor reservoir, the first one of KLIS and Shadnagar, Jadcherla, Vattem, Bijenapalli, Nagarkurnool, Pedda Kothapalli and Kollapur.
