Call to ensure justice to victims of sexual assault

VISAKHAPATNAM: There is a phenomenal increase in different forms of violence against women, especially rape, and the criminal justice system is sometimes failing in its duty to protect the victims, said an Associate Professor of Law, Department of Law, Andhra University, N. Nirmala.
Delivering a lecture on “Criminal justice system – gender perspective” organised by the Research Forum of Andhra University here on Monday, she said that rape was being used as a weapon by the State machinery to suppress nationality struggles like the Manorama case in Manipur and the alleged gang rape of tribal women of Vakapalli village by the Grey Hounds.
‘Simplify procedure’
She called for simplification of procedures in the examination of sexual harassment cases.
Dr. Nirmala said in cases involving the State machinery, the investigating officials were taking an active role in destroying evidence .
