VISAKHAPATNAM: Even if authorities of Andhra University show some lenience towards the students who resorted to ragging, the police will not, said Commissioner of Police N. Sambasiva Rao here on Monday. “You may think you can manage, but it haunts to in every step of your life, whether it is while applying for a job, a passport, etc., once you enter the police records. Imprisonment ranges from two months to life”, he said at a meeting against ragging organised by students of Andhra University College of Engineering. Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy and Principal Allam Appa Rao advised the students not to resort to ragging and were firm that no one caught ragging his or her juniors would be spared. Support juniorsProf. Reddy wanted the senior students to treat junior as their younger kin and provide them all support and help. Prof. Appa Rao pointed out that AUCE was rated as the first in AP and 31st in the country and wanted the students and faculty to make it one of the top 10 best institutions. There was no incident of ragging last year and one happened this year was outside the campus but stern action had been taken. The juniors entering campus on September 27 must be made comfortable, he said.Registrar P. Vijaya Prakash wished that he sent a report again like last year to the UGC that this campus was ragging free and it was for the seniors to make it happen. Rector B. Satyanarayana wanted the students to treat Mr. Sambasiva Rao, an alumni of the college, as an elder brother. He explained the steps being taken by the administration to eliminate ragging.
