dated September 25, 1957: Tunku against merger

Tunku Abdul Rahman, Prime Minister of Malaya, said in Singapore on September 22 that a merger of the Federation of Malaya and Singapore was not possible. He made this statement at a party given to him on his first visit to Singapore since the attainment of independence by Malaya three weeks ago. Mr. Lim Yew-hock, Chief Minister of Singapore, commenting on the Tunku’s statement, said, “It is better to be friendly neighbours than remain a quarrelsome family.”
