Dangerous escalation

The escalation of the Ramar Sethu issue is not in the best interests of a secular democracy and peace-loving nation. It is unfortunate that the parties in question are vying with one another to trade charges and counter-charges, making the issue more explosive and complicated.

In a coalition government, every partner has a duty to adhere to the common good and wellbeing. As a constituent of the UPA government at the Centre, the DMK would do well not to fall prey to the machinations of fundamentalists who are bent on pulling it down under some pretext.

The reported remarks of former BJP MP, Ram Vilas Vedanti, against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, and the DMK’s reaction to them show how explosive the issue can become if the brakes are not applied by all concerned immediately.

Instead of insisting on an apology from all and sundry, including Mr. Karunanidhi, Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani should let bygones be bygones and allow the Sethusamudram project to come up. Statesmanship is all about give-and-take in the national interest.

The issue is snowballing into a needless controversy. While the ‘fatwa’ which the BJP promptly disowned is despicable beyond doubt, equally mindless are the attacks on the BJP offices in Chennai and various other places is Tamil Nadu.

A seasoned politician like Mr. Karunanidhi should have taken more care before passing his remarks on a sensitive issue, which have given an opportunity to some sections to exploit the situation.

Instead of being a subject of a democratic and peaceful debate, the Ramar Sethu issue is becoming a street fight with ugly scenes. The entire blame for this goes to the authors of the ASI affidavit. The pro-Sethu and anti-Sethu elements, we are sure, will agree that attacks are no way to settle the issue.
