News Analysis
In an interview with Mr. Song Min-soon, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, “‘No reservation over nuclear deal’” (Op-Ed, September 22, 2007), the member countries of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Project were given as the U.S., Canada, the European Union, China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea (RoK). It was an error. Canada is not a member. The clarification is that the ITER is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. The partners in the project — the ITER Parties — are the European Union (represented by EURATOM), Japan, the People’s Republic of China, India, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and the U.S. The ITER will be constructed in Europe, at Cadarache in the south of France. A sentence in “Thousands protest racial injustice” (‘International” page, September 22, 2007) was: “Protesters accused the local district attorney of racism for failing to meet out equal punishment to the white students who started fights with their black peers.” It should have been “… for failing to mete out equal punishment ….” An editorial “Flood preparedness, a necessity” (September 19, 2007) gave the expansion of IMD as the Indian Meteorological Department. It should have been the India Meteorological Department. Referring to a Guardian article “Richard Wagner and the Nazis” (Op-Ed, September 14, 2007), a reader says that the German term “Götterdämmerung” (which literally means “twilight of the gods”), and which appeared in the first paragraph of the article, is the name of an opera by R. Wagner (1876). The correct spelling must be either “Götterdämmerung” or Goetterdaemmerung, written without o-Umlaut and a-Umlaut. (It was published as Gotterdammerung.) Dr. Gabriele Landwehr, Director/Institutsleiterin, Max Mueller Bhavan, Goethe-Institut Chennai, clarifies that the reader is right.
