Heavy fighting rages in Sri Lanka

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: Heavy fighting was reported between the Sri Lanka military and the LTTE along the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) in the north on Monday. There were conflicting versions on the casualties.

Initially, the government had claimed that at least 20 cadres of the Tamil Tigers were killed when troops neutralised an attempt to breach the forward defences in Kilali. However, the Defence Ministry later maintained that three cadres of the LTTE and a soldier were killed in the fighting.

“Two LTTE bunkers were also destroyed in the army retaliatory attacks. A soldier succumbed to his injuries on admission to Palali military hospital, while five other sustained minor injuries”, the ministry said. TamilNet claimed that heavy artillery was fired from army-controlled Mannaar into LTTE-controlled Maanthai West on Monday morning, following an army ground operation in Mannaar-Vavuniyaa border on Sunday evening.
