Violence outside Tata project site in Singur

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Violence erupted outside the compound wall of the upcoming Tata Motors’ automobile manufacturing project at Singur, when activists of the Krishi Jami, Jiban, Jibika Raksha (Save Farmland, Lives and Livelihood) Committee of which the Trinamool Congress is the principal constituent, tried to storm into the project site on Monday.

Tear-gas shells were burst by the police to disperse the mob. No damage was caused and construction work at the site was not affected.

The incident occurred on the eve of a rally to be addressed by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee near the site demanding that land ‘acquired forcibly’ by the State government for the project be returned to the peasants.

The Trinamool Congress has warned the State government it would tear down the wall and not allow the project to be set up if its demand is not met. There have been attempts earlier to damage the wall in which the police have had to intervene.

Work progressing

Work is progressing at a steady pace and the first car is expected to roll out of the factory in June 2008, a senior official of the State’s Industries Department told The Hindu.

More than 2,000 persons are engaged in construction work presently and piling work for the setting up of different units of the plant is continuing unhindered, he added.
