Students of the Pala Government Higher Secondary School near the Aralam Farm in Kannur managed to get none other than Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to inaugurate their scheme to distribute cloth bags as part of a campaign by the school’s nature club against plastic carry bags in the locality. The Chief Minister was at the school on September 22 to inaugurate the distribution of possession certificates to Adivasis for their rehabilitation in the farm. After the inauguration, local MLA K.K. Shylaja requested the Chief Minister to inaugurate the nature club’s anti-plastic bag campaign. Mr. Achuthanandan cheered up the audience when he announced in his inimitable style that he was inaugurating the students campaign. The students in the school, numbering nearly 1700, envisaged the distribution of cloth bags in all households in the area in a bid to eradicate plastic carry bags, a step further on the ban on plastics below 30 microns announced by the government . The Chief Minister displayed a few cloth bags stitched by the students as part of the campaign on the occasion. Mohammed Nazeer
