THANJAVUR: Underground drainage work had been completed in Thanjavur Municipal area and it would become operational from September 27, said C.Vijayaraj Kumar, Thanjavur Collector, here on Tuesday. The Collector, along with Swaran Singh, Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD), took a team of presspersons to the Sewarage Treatment Plant, all the six pumping stations and demonstrated the functioning of the scheme. The Collector said that administrative sanction for starting the underground drainage work was given in 2002. The project time was only 36 months. As there were some hitches and a court case, the work was stayed. Again in December 2006, there were two more court cases and again the work was stayed. The Government took pains to get the stays vacated and the work went on in full swing only in 2007 and the TWAD, implementing agency, had completed the work. Under the project, sewer lines to a distance of 259.78 km had been completed. A total of 10,059 manholes had been over. Pumping main had been completed to a distance of 9.03 km. The town had been divided into five zones and five pumping stations completed. It was planned to provide 30,000 house connections. M.K.Stalin, Local Administration Minister, is inaugurating the underground drainage project on September 27.
