Kharge: Congress responsible for development of State

Special Correspondent

Government surviving on false promises, says Dharam Singh

Making a point: President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge addressing an election rally in Gulbarga on Tuesday.

GULBARGA: President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge and the former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition in Legislative Assembly, N. Dharam Singh, on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) of belittling the contributions of Congress in developing India as a super power. They said people of the State would give a befitting reply to the BJP and Janata Dal (S) in the urban local body elections.

Addressing an election rally amidst rain in Gulbarga city, both the leaders took exception to the repeated charges made by the BJP and Janata Dal (S) leaders that Congress had not done anything for the people when it was in power, and said but for the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi the country would not have developed into a superpower in science and technology and would not have become a nuclear super power in the world.

Mr. Kharge said that Congress was responsible for achieving self sufficiency in foodgrain production and putting the country on the path of development in various fields. Mr. Kharge and Mr. Singh said that Congress was responsible for putting the State on the path of development. All irrigation projects in the Cauvery and the Krishna delta were due to the efforts of successive Congress governments.

Stating that both the BJP and Janata Dal (S) had also ruled the country and the State for a few years, Mr. Kharge wanted to know their contribution for development in different fields. “Instead of blaming Congress for all the ills, the BJP and Janata Dal (S) leaders should introspect on what they have done for the welfare of people and development of the country and the State,” he said.

Mr. Singh said that the State Government was surviving on false promises and catchy slogans. It has done nothing for the welfare of the people, he said.

Mr. Singh said that in the early 1990s when Gulbarga city faced severe drinking water crisis the then Congress Government led by S. Bangarappa pleaded with the Union Government and successfully transported water in train from Mantralaya to meet the drinking water requirement of the city.

.He said it was the Government headed by him which was responsible for persuading the Karnataka High Court to concede the long-pending demand for establishing the circuit Bench of the high court in Gulbarga and Hubli-Dharwad.

The Congress leaders also addressed election meetings in Jewargi, Shahapur, Surpur and Yadgir towns campaigning for the party candidates.
