Four held

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Irukkangudi police on Tuesday arrested four persons in connection with gang rape and murder of a devotee at the Mariamman temple.

The 40-year-old woman was found dead on September 15 in a bush. Investigation into the case of suspicious death led to the arrest of four youths, S. Subbaraj (26), R. Marimuthu (24), R. Rajkumar (30) and S. Balamurugan (26). “All of them were working or running shops in the temple area,” the Inspector of Police, P. Devarajan, said.

The accused had intercepted the devotee in a secluded place when she went there to attend to nature’s call. After raping her, he strangulated her to death, the Inspector said.

During interrogation, Subburaj had confessed to have involved in a similar gang rape and murder of a 25-year-old unidentified woman in 2003. The police were on the look out for three other accused.
