KANCHEEPURAM: A group of councillors was said to have moved a no-confidence motion against Kancheepuram Municipal Chairman V. Rajendran. Enquiries reveal that 28 councillors including vice-chairman G. Sambandam, who was elected on an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ticket and recently shifted his allegiance to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and council leader of the DMK, A. Sekar, have submitted a memorandum to the Regional Director, Municipal Administration, Chengalpattu, seeking permission to move no-confidence motion against the Chairman. Subsequently, the RDMA has sent intimation letters to the councillors, stating that a meeting would be held at the Kancheepuram Municipal Council hall on October 10 to discuss the no-confidence motion and take a final decision. High Court orderMeanwhile, a group of AIADMK councillors have obtained an order from the Madras High Court squashing the order passed by the Collector on the conduct of a council meeting on February 12, 2007. The Chairman, who convened a meeting on February 12, subsequently postponed it for some reasons. However, DMK councillors, led by Mr. Sekar, and senior councillor and former Chairman K. Arumugham, convened a council meeting on February 12 by electing their colleague S. Chandru as the acting Chairman. When the validity of February 12 meeting was questioned by the AIADMK, the Collector passed an order in favour of the DMK. During the same period, an AIADMK councillor (who, later, defected to the DMK) moved court, seeking disqualification of Mr. Arumugham, stating that he had failed to attend three council meetings in a row between November 2006 and February 2007. But, after joining the DMK, he withdrew the case. However, a non-AIADMK councillor filed a case, seeking disqualification of Mr. Arumugham on the same grounds at the District Sessions Court recently. He had also moved the court seeking disqualification of a councillor from Little Kancheepuram area, who was elected on an AIADMK ticket and switched over to the DMK recently. The petitioner prayed for disqualification of the DMK councillor since he owed Rs.2.35 lakh to the civic body towards payment of charges for running cable television service network, for three years from 2000.
