Several parts of Delhi facing shortage of water

Staff Reporter

Yamuna water level decreases

To offset the shortfall, Haryana has released about 500 cusecs of water

NEW DELHI: Though raw water supply to the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant has been increased, several parts of the Capital have been facing a shortage of water for the past few days. The dip in supply has been caused by a fall in the level of the Yamuna.

“The water level in the Yamuna has dropped from 674.5 feet to 672 feet, which has severely affected the production of water. While the Delhi Jal Board has been trying to supply water during the morning hours, there are several areas in the city where the supply has been curtailed during the evening hours,” said sources in the Jal Board.

NDMC area

To offset the shortfall, Haryana has released about 500 cusecs of water which is likely to reach the city by Tuesday evening.

“Among the affected areas are South-West Delhi, East Delhi and North Delhi. Water supply has also been affected in the NDMC area also, especially in Connaught Place and Gole Market areas where tankers are being sent to provide water,” said Jal Board sources.

Production

Since the production at Chandrawal and Wazirabad has come down, supply has been severely affected in many areas including Punjabi Bagh, Civil Lines, Delhi University, Patel Nagar, Naraina, Moti Bagh, Dhaula Kuan, Walled City, Paharganj, Karol Bagh and R.K. Puram, sources added. Explaining the reasons for the dip in the water level of the Yamuna, sources said: “There has been less rain, snow has also stopped melting; besides high temperatures have led to an increase in consumption of water.”
