‘Groundwater in Tarikere taluk will dry up on a stretch of 47 km’ BANGALORE: Five leaders, cutting across political affiliations under the banner of Anti-Upper Bhadra Virodhi Horata Samiti on Tuesday demanded that the report of the K.C. Reddy Technical Committee on Upper Bhadra Project should be shelved as the groundwater sources in Tarikere taluk in Chikmaglur district would dry up if it was implemented in the present form. Speaking to reporters after submitting a memorandum to Governor Rameshwar Thakur, the samiti office-bearers, T.H. Shivashankarappa, MLA; and B.R. Neelakantappa, S.M.Nagaraj, H.R.Raju and P.Thippaih, former MLAs; and R. Devanand (general secretary) said they were not against providing water to the people of Chitradurga, Tumkur and Kolar districts. But they said the groundwater in the taluk would dry up on a stretch of 47 km where the water canal would be laid. Clearance not obtainedMr. Dayanand alleged that the Water Resources Department had not obtained permission from the Union Minister of Forest and Environment, the Railways, the National Highways and farmers on whose lands the canal would be built. The leaders said that Tarikere taluk would get water if the canal was laid near the Lingadahalli Hills. Mr. Nelakantappa said they had decided to start indefinite hunger strike after October 3, if the Government failed to heed the committee’s demands. Mr. Shivashankarappa alleged that the ruling coalition partners were implementing the project for appeasing voters in the three districts. Chikmaglur District provided 100 tmcft of water to the Tunga and 156 tanks outside Tarikere taluk, a backward taluk, were getting water, whereas only one tank in the taluk would get water from the proposed canal, the samiti said.
