THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Federation of Residents Associations Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT), the apex body of residents associations in the district, will take steps to rid Thiruvananthapuram city and district of plastic. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting convened here on Tuesday, a release issued by T.K. Bhaskarapanikker, president, and Parinayam Devakumar, general secretary, of the Association stated. Special task forces will be constituted in all its member associations, apart from providing support for a campaign against the use of plastic launched by the local bodies. The Association will assist in cleaning hospitals, public sector and educational institutions. Awareness programmes will be conducted at the household level in keeping premises safe from the plastic menace. The Association urged members of the public to desist from using flex boards and plastic bouquets. The Association has exhorted the office-bearers of all residents associations to come forward and safeguard their fundamental right to fresh air and pure water. It was suggested that plastic wastes should be collected in a segregated manner with wastes that can be recycled and those that could be used for tarring roads being collected separately. The Association also urged the government to provide subsidy for setting up plants to provide bio-gas in houses, apart from starting mobile road repair units in the five zones within the Corporation limit.
