THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Agro Industries Corporation has launched two value-added products in the market as part of its diversification programme. The products, Coco Crispy and Coconut Vinegar, were formally launched by Minister for Agriculture Mullakkara Ratnakaran at a function organised here on Tuesday. Addressing the function, the Minister said the new venture would act as a catalyst to revive the market for coconut products and give a boost to farmers. The project was taken up with technical assistance from the Coconut Development Board under the Central Government. Moves were on to equip women’s self-help groups with the technology and financial assistance to set up manufacturing units for the two products. A training-cum- manufacturing unit has been set up at the Agro Research Centre under the Corporation in Thrissur. The tender coconut chips marketed under the brand name Coco Crispy is promoted as a health snack. The corporation claims that the product is free from oil and rich in fibre. The vinegar is a by-product of the chips manufacturing process and is promoted as a substitute for synthetic vinegar. The corporation has drawn up plans to develop other value-added products from coconut. Pannian Ravindran, MP, underlined the need for attractive packaging and an effective market penetration strategy. V. Sivankutty, MLA, presided over the function. V. Surendran Pillai, MLA, Agricultural Production Commissioner K. Jayakumar, Agriculture Director K.K. Gangadharan, chairman of Kerala Agro Industries Corporation Ambalathara Sreedharan Nair, managing director N.K. Manoj and deputy director, Coconut Development Board, Rajiv P. George were present on the occasion.
