NEW DELHI: A trial court here on Tuesday directed the Delhi police to lodge a First Information Report against the Leader of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House, Subhash Arya, and to conduct appropriate investigation into allegations of “casteist comments” mouthed by him during a recent scuffle in the House. The court observed: “From the perusal of the preliminary report it seems that a quarrel was taking place in the House and the complainants were beaten up. Some derogatory words were used against them by Subhash Arya and others. There are allegations in the complaint that the offensive words regarding their caste were specifically addressed to the complainants.” The incident pertains to the much-televised scuffle between councillors from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party during the House session last month. Defending his position and proclaiming innocence, Mr. Arya said: “These are baseless allegations. I entered the scuffle in the House a good 20 minutes after it had started and that too only to defend councillor Kiran Chopra who was later diagnosed with a fractured bone. I am an ‘Arya Samaji’ and it is sacrilege for me to indulge in slighting any community or caste.” However, Leader of the Opposition J. K. Sharma made it clear that his party was taking the issue with utmost seriousness. “Mr. Arya should resign on moral grounds as he has no right to continue as Leader of the House.”
