Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The Government has sought administrative sanction from the Centre for resurfacing 10.40 km of the Kottamam-Vazhimukku stretch of NH 47 passing through the capital. The estimate for taking up the resurfacing of the stretch enroute to Nagercoil had already been submitted to the Union Government. The NH 47 section was resurfaced last in December 2002 at a cost of Rs.2.09 crore. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan had informed R. Selvaraj in the last Assemby session that the maintenance work of the Kottamam-Kaliakkavila stretch was being carried out. The adjacent seven km stretch from Kottamam to Kaliakkavila in the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border was resurfaced in March 2004 at a cost of Rs.1.29 crore. The stretch is one of the busiest sections in the NH 47 passing through the capital district owing to the movement of goods vehicles from the neighbouring Tamil Nadu to the State. Sabarimala seasonDuring the Sabarimala season, the Ayyappa devotees from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu use the stretch to proceed to Pampa. The Defect Liability for the two stretches was for a period of one year and it was the responsibility of the contractor to carry out repair works during the period. After the end of the Defect Liability period, it is the duty of Public Works Department (NH) wing to carry out repair works. In 2006-2007, the State had received Rs.60.25 crore under the Plan work from the Union Shipping and Surface Transport Ministry for rebuilding of the NH stretches passing through the State. A sum of Rs.32.59 crore was received for maintenance and repair and Rs.28.51 crore for the State roads from the Centre during the period. The Centre had already prepared the plan for converting the NH 47 and NH 17 into six and four lanes by including them in the National Highway Development Project (B).
