Workshop on quality research

Staff Reporter

Experts to discuss on subjects and modern techniques

Focus on structural programmes in research sector

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala will organise a two-day workshop on quality improvement in research, Vice-Chancellor M. K. Ramachandran Nair has said.

At a press conference held here on Tuesday Mr. Nair said Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac would inaugurate the seminar at 9.30 a.m. on September 28. More than 500 research guides from the university’s teaching departments, affiliated colleges and recognised research centres will take part in the workshop. Experts in various fields from other universities and research institutions are also scheduled to participate, he said.

The first session of the workshop will focus on the growth of research in various sectors. About 20 experts in various subjects will act as panellists for this session that will also focus on the scope of research subjects, their interdependency and on the use of modern techniques for carrying out research.

On its second day the workshop will look into the structural programmes of the research sector in the university and outside.

The way a research topic is selected, the progress of the research work through various phases, the formulation of thesis, its publication and evaluation will be among topics discussed. One of the aims of the workshop is to formulate suggestions on how to monitor researchers during each phase of their work and how to make them more involved in what they are doing. Such suggestions, it is expected, would help give a qualitative boost to research activities in the University, Mr. Nair said.

In reply to a question Mr. Nair said he would hold talks with senate members of the KSU who are on a fast in front of the university buildings against the proposed hike in examination fee of degree and postgraduate courses in the university.

The syndicate, at its meeting on September 26, will discuss the fee hike.
